The gorgeous weather yesterday made me want to go do something spring-like. So I did some garden clean up and took a look at the green house. Last fall we raised a brood of chicks in it and they left it looking horrendous. Every surface was covered with chick dust including the window-walls. So I got out the hose and washed everything down and scrubbed it with a deck brush. Then I lined up all of my starter trays and put my starter pots in them. I think I've got about 4 trays of 48 pots and one tray that has 72 pots along with a ton of little 4x4 round and square pots. I didn't add all of those up but it makes more starts than I can put in my 1800 sq ft garden.
Today's not as nice as yesterday but having all of those empty pots made me itchy to plant something. So today I went digging in our compost pile for "dirt" to put in my pots then planted some Miner's Lettuce, Pompom lettuce and Snap peas. They are all pretty cold hardy so they should be OK. The greenhouse should keep everything from freezing but it doesn't really keep things warm in there. I wanted to plant spinach but realized that I used all of my seeds last season. Oh darn, I guess I HAVE to make a trip to Flower World. :)
I was wondering how early we can start to dig over and prepare the soil for this years veggies! I am going to try again this year and cover the top too. I am thinking to move the patch and make it bigger with walk ways between the rows... Hmmm lots of ideas, just need the motivation and the promise of Spring to get me going!! I have already planted some flowers and tidied the flower beds throughout last weekend... I love the sunshine! Let it be plentiful and long lasting!! Thanks for blogging Angie!
ReplyDeleteYou know, I've planted my garden at very different times in the spring and they all ended up producing pretty well. One year I planted seeds directly in the ground in the beginning of June and I still got quite a few veggies. Since we made the garden larger I've started things earlier either inside or in the greenhouse and I guess we've gotten things to harvest earlier, but some of the later veggies like zucchini and broccoli came at about the same time. So even if you don't plant your garden until much later you should still have some yummy veggies this summer!
ReplyDeleteoooh! i want some spinach this year! put in some starts for me! i can even give you some 'pots' (read: old yogurt containers) to put them in... or, if you don't want to spare seeds, i can get my own... ;) yay for spring! thanks for the inspiration. might try to get out this week and start clearing out last year's old crapola!
